As an agent you know there is no one-size-fits-all for any client. From original Medicare to Medicare supplements, this post is a brief overview of the different parts of Medicare and the coverage each provides.
Medicare Part A = Hospitalization
In the unfortunate event that your client has to be hospitalized as an inpatient, Medicare A covers home health, hospice, and skilled nursing care. This is part of Original Medicare.
Medicare Part B = Medical
Your client’s medical expenses that do not involve inpatient hospitalization are covered by Medicare Part B. Think doctors’ offices and non-hospital medical services.
Most people with Medicare have Part A and Part B or Original Medicare. Original Medicare includes out-of-pocket costs that depend on the services provided.
Medicare Part C
Also known as Medicare Advantage Plans or “MA Plans”, Medicare Part C plans are offered by Medicare-approved private companies. These companies must follow rules set by Medicare. These plans can include more coverage.
Sometimes plans offer out-of-network coverage, but at a higher cost. Your clients can obtain coverage for things Original Medicare doesn’t cover. These are also called Ancillary Products, like vision, hearing, dental, and approved gym or fitness programs or discounts.
Medicare Part D
Medicare Part D provides prescription or drug coverage to help pay for your client’s medications. Seniors who are not on any medications should consider getting Medicare Part D even though it’s optional. This is especially important if your client does not have another creditable prescription drug coverage through employment or a union (or with Extra Help), as there is a penalty for signing up for this plan later for as long as you have Medicare coverage!
For Medicare drug coverage, your client must enroll in a Medicare-approved plan that offers drug coverage specific to their needs. Plans vary in cost and which drugs are covered.
